What bokononists whisper whenever they think of how complicated and unpredictable the machinery of life really is.

By Elton Beard

There are two kinds of people in the world, those who divide people into two kinds and those who don't. I don't.

Shorter David Gelernter:
Conservative U. -- in cyberspace
  • New technologies now under development will enable conservatives to do to intellectual discourse in academia what Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly have done to reasoned debate in the media.

Shorter Walter Jajko:
It's propaganda time.
  • A free society cannot survive without a government-controlled press.

Shorter Max Boot:
White flag Democrats
  • Iraq is Vietnam after all.

Plus: Yes, Mr. Boot, I Expect You to Lie. As is often the case, Max Boot's depictions diverge widely from the facts. Some examples:

Democrats have been stepping forth to renounce their previous support for the liberation of Iraq
False: not one single elected Democrat has ever stepped forward to renounce previous support for the "liberation of Iraq". Some have expressed regret for authorizing Mr. Bush to disarm Saddam Hussein by force if necessary but only because Mr. Bush abused that authorization to start a war unnecessarily.
Now that the war has turned out to be a lot harder than anticipated, the Democrats want to run up the white flag.
False: to "run up the white flag" is a euphemism for surrender - but no democrat is proposing that American troops lay down their arms and give themselves up. At most, some Democrats propose to terminate a pointless war of aggression and return the country Mr. Bush illegally invaded back to its people.
The Baathists and their jihadist allies were planning a ruthless terrorist campaign even before U.S. troops entered Iraq.
Bzzzzt! Fabrication: there is absolutely no evidence for any pre-war alliance between the secular Baathists and religiously-motivated fighters. Mr. Boot manufactures this assertion from whole cloth.

Shorter Garance Franke-Ruta:
Liberal Concerns About Abortion.
  • I am bothered by women who choose to have more abortions than I think they should.

Plus: Poor Value Judgment. Garance Franke-Ruta frames her argument in the language of concern for poor women, but the problems of poor and otherwise troubled women in America hardly need repeat abortions for an indicator. The reason these problems are largely ignored is not for lack of markers but because American society obviously doesn't much care about poor people. If Ms. Franke-Ruta wanted to help poor women she could argue for better mental or reproductive or general health services for them, or for any number of other possible constructive solutions. Instead, she takes the time to be troubled by the behavior of certain women:

Yet the reluctance of liberals and pro-choice advocates to shine a spotlight on the troubling repeat-abortion phenomenon has obscured a growing public health issue.
But to be troubled by the morally neutral reproductive choices of others is not a very liberal thing to do at all. In fact, it's more like a defining characteristic of what passes for morality among conservatives these days. It would seem rather counter-productive for liberals to "shine a spotlight" on such choices when doing so can accomplish nothing except lend legitimacy to conservative assumptions.

It's almost, almost, as if Ms. Franke-Ruta wants to induce liberals to think like conservatives, to re-frame a private choice as a public matter. But that's impossible. I mean, look, she's writing this in even the liberal New Republic. So perish the thought.

Funny thing is, the naughty women who so trouble Ms. Franke-Ruta are actually doing the responsible thing - safely terminating an unwanted pregnancy. This, she find troubling. At the same time, there must be quite a few pregnant troubled young women out there who really shouldn't be having babies and perhaps wouldn't be if only they had ready access to counseling and abortion services - but don't. Oddly, that doesn't seem to trouble our New Republic liberal at all.
