What bokononists whisper whenever they think of how complicated and unpredictable the machinery of life really is.

By Elton Beard

There are two kinds of people in the world, those who divide people into two kinds and those who don't. I don't.

9:00 PM PT

Shorter Nicholas D. Kristof:
The Greediest Generation
  • Many children live in poverty today because all available resources are being expended on avaricious pensioners.

See Also: uggabugga and Temporary Matt at TPM.

4:30 PM PT

Shorter Michael Kinsley:
Bush Gets B+ for Honesty, Even Courage, on Social Security
  • Once you accept Mr. Bush's take on Social Security it becomes obvious that he's a remarkably honest and perceptive fellow.

See Also: MaxSpeak (You Listen!) and Yglesias/TPM. And, of course, julia.

3:00 PM PT

Shorter George Weigel:
The Spiritual Malaise That Haunts Europe
  • Nice little continent you've got there, sure would be a shame if anything happened to it, you know what I mean?

Saturday, April 30, 2005
6:00 PM PT

Shorter John Tierney:
Bush as Robin Hood
  • Democrats can stop pretending to care about the poor and dispossessed now that Mr. Bush is doing that.

See Also: Best of the Blogs, Political Animal and Rising Hegemon.

12:00 PM PT

Shorter David Gelernter:
The 'We're Smart, You're Dumb' Principle
  • Democrats, like university professors, support public schools, and university professors (as everybody knows) are, like, Marxists, ergo, Democrats are actually Marxists, QED.

See Also: Matt Yglesias has a theory about Michael Kinsley which is clearly correct since it matches the one proposed here last week.

Plus: False Logician. Professor Gelernter accuses critics of Mr. Bush's social security demolition plan of "lying". Yet in this very article he himself commits severe terminological inexactitude by stating that Mr. Bush "wants to let you keep a great big whopping 4% of your payroll taxes in a private account". As the learned Computer Science Professor must know, the amount at issue is not "4% of your payroll taxes" but 4% of your salary, which is roughly 64% of your payroll taxes. That, as Emily Litella used to say, is very different. Ergo, Professor Gelernter is actually a lying liar. QED.

The detection of additional falsehoods in this article is left as a (trivial) exercise for the reader.

4:00 PM PT

Shorter Max Boot:
Bolton's Not Nice. But He's Good.
  • It's true that Mr. Bolton is somewhat prone to err, but only on the side of aggression.

See Also: Best of the Blogs rebuts Boot.

3:30 PM PT

Shorter David S. Broder:
Paying a Price for Overreaching
  • Not that there's anything wrong with what the Republicans are trying to do, but they're trying to do too much of it at once.

See Also: julia goes gah.

Shorter Bob Dole*:
Up, Down or Out
  • The Democratic minority has abandoned the tradition of mutual self-restraint that has long allowed the Senate to function as an institution.
