What bokononists whisper whenever they think of how complicated and unpredictable the machinery of life really is.

By Elton Beard

There are two kinds of people in the world, those who divide people into two kinds and those who don't. I don't.

Norah Vincent
No one bleats more loudly than a critic who's been critiqued. So says Norah Vincent, who must have been hard-pressed to fill her column-inches on deadline when she wrote this piece entitled "Media Can Dish It Out but Can't Take It" for yesterday's LA Times. Ms. Vincent's recycling of the "liberal media bias" canard would be unremarkable, except that it was remarked upon favorably by a certain famous professor who claims to not be a conservative.

Not to dig too deep into the muck, but Ms. Vincent's case (I use the term charitably) consists of three points.

  • The unfriendly treatment of Bernard Goldberg by his colleagues in 1996 after he published an article in the Wall Street Journal accusing them of liberal bias.

  • The apparent disinclination of the NY Times to pay for any more articles by Andrew Sullivan after four years of doing so, because "he makes a habit of deconstructing the New York Times' liberal slant" and in "retribution for the sharpness of some of his broadsides against the Times".

  • The fact that William McGowan's Coloring the News, a book that claims to expose "an invisible liberal consensus", has been ignored by the New York Times Book Review. This despite receiving "generally favorable reviews, even in such papers as the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times, which are sharply criticized in his book".
And, lest we forget, Ms. Vincent reminds us that "the Times routinely labels conservatives as such yet rarely identifies political liberals".

This sad, self-contradictory bleat from Norah Vincent is hardly worthy of additional refutation; if you still buy that sort of nonsense then you probably aren't reading this now. What's interesting is that Glen Reynolds over at Instapundit links to the article and describes it as "thoughts on media sensitivity that are worth reading". The professor professes to be a skeptic when it comes to "the likes of Bob Kuttner", but not, it seems, when it comes to the likes of Norah Vincent. An interesting blind spot.

Rush Limbaugh Hitches Wagon to a Falling Star. Reader Mark Poyser writes:

Amazingly (?) Rush Limbaugh has gone hog-wild on the global warming issue (he don't believe in it)

Two days after the EPA report made news, he's now selling a T-shirt:

The Vanity of Rush Limbaugh

I'm surprised that Limbaugh is hitching his star to this issue. Going forward, the consensus will only grow that global warming is real, is the result of human activity, and will be the cause of all sorts of problems.
