What bokononists whisper whenever they think of how complicated and unpredictable the machinery of life really is.

By Elton Beard

There are two kinds of people in the world, those who divide people into two kinds and those who don't. I don't.

The Florida recount results are unsatisfying. The media reports are unedifying. The fact that no practicing politician has bothered to spin this is a bit surprising. Three days after the release of the NORC data, it is already receding from public memory, having changed nothing.

A presidential election that did not reflect the will of the voters is no big thing, it seems.

Washington Times Defends Bill Clinton: now, that's a headline. One day after publishing a Joseph Curl piece ("Clinton calls terror a U.S. debt to past") that even Andrew Sullivan called "appallingly slanted", the Washington Times published a new take on former President Clinton's recent speech at Georgetown University. In his "Commentary: A bum rap for Clinton", Peter Roff addressed "the perception that Clinton had all but endorsed the Taliban", and concluded:

President Clinton is saying two things: First, that terror is a centuries-old tactic whose use has long-lasting implications; second, the United States is not unblemished when it comes to abuses of the human spirit and freedom.

This is a far cry from acknowledging that the United States is to blame for Sept. 11.

Clinton twice voiced explicit support for President Bush in the war against terror. He is to be commended for that, even though it should be reasonably expected that he would do so.

Sounds to me like a retraction of the Curl article, although Roff didn't mention it.

And then there's Robert Novak. On yesterday's CNN Capital Gang, this was his "Outrage of the Week" (italics added):

NOVAK: Quite a week for Bill Clinton. It began with the former president bungling an attempt at Democratic unity, trying to save the New York City election for mayor. Next, he told admiring students at Georgetown that his country, under terrorist attack, is paying the price for African slavery. And yesterday, he resigned from the Supreme Court bar just before he was disbarred for lying in court. In effect: You can't fire me, I quit.

His lies caused his impeachment, and he's still a national embarrassment.

Mr. Novak was careful to merely imply, rather than state, that President Clinton believes the U.S. deserved the terrorist attack because of its past sins. Clever. Now we can only speculate on whether or not Mr. Novak was knowingly propagating a falsehood.
